Strategic Expansion Around the Giza Pyramids
A thorough tourism master plan is underway to significantly increase hotel capacity near the Giza Pyramids by 2040, anticipating a surge in visitors following the full opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Minister of Housing Sherif El-Sherbiny announced the strategy during a cabinet meeting led by prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Sunday, according to official reports.
The plan focuses on balancing “heritage and modernity” through attracting international hotel brands and developing expanded entertainment districts. These developments are based on market studies projecting future visitor numbers, as Egypt prepares for the GEM’s complete launch.
Boosting Egypt’s Tourism Goals
This initiative is central to Egypt’s broader goal of doubling annual tourist arrivals to 30 million by 2028. The tourism sector is a vital source of foreign currency for Egypt, wich has faced economic challenges in recent years.
The government has long prioritized reorganizing areas like Nazlet El-Semman, located adjacent to the ancient necropolis. These historically important areas have struggled with infrastructure, accessibility, and security issues, creating challenges for tourists traveling between the Pyramids and the GEM.
Preserving Heritage and Creating an Iconic Destination
assistant Minister of Housing Abdel Khalek Ibrahim emphasized the plan’s commitment to preserving the “visual identity” of the Giza plateau,a designated World Heritage site, while simultaneously creating an “iconic” destination. the plan will include a variety of hospitality options offered by major international hotel chains.
The opening of the GEM,situated just two kilometers from the Pyramids,is expected to reshape Cairo’s tourism landscape, shifting the focus from the Tahrir Square museum to the Giza plateau.
Improving the Tourist Experience
prime Minister Madbouly stressed the importance of enhancing the overall tourist experience, advocating for a blend of commercial and recreational activities to complement the archaeological sites.Giza Governor Adel El-naggar affirmed the local authority’s dedication to maintaining the aesthetic appeal of Egypt’s most famous ancient landmark through ongoing maintenance work around the museum complex.
