Gladiator Star Zack steel Lays Baby Son leo too Rest Following brave 13-Day Fight
Zack Steel, known for his role in the film Gladiator, has tragically laid his baby son, Leo, to rest. The heartbreaking loss follows a grueling 13-day battle for the newborn in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a period Steel has openly shared with raw honesty adn vulnerability.
A Short Life Marked by Courage
Leo faced an extraordinary number of medical challenges in his brief life. Steel detailed the immense struggles his son endured, including three blood transfusions, a collapsed lung, brain bleeds (grade one and grade two), a PDA heart condition – a hole in the heart – and a hole in his trachea which led to perilous air pockets forming around his lungs. Doctors believed the tracheal issue stemmed from a tube creating a perforation in his windpipe.
The family held a funeral a month after Leo’s passing, a deeply emotional farewell to their little boy. Steel revealed a portion of the poignant speech he delivered at the service, offering a glimpse into the profound grief and enduring love he feels.
“You were held, you were known and you were loved,” Steel shared. “And tho the world only had a brief chance to meet you, you changed it and you changed us. Now that you rest, we still carry you- in every quiet moment, in the breath between tears, in the space you filled just by being here. our son, our lion- you will always matter. You will always be ours.Rest easy our little boy.”
Sharing Leo’s Story and Launching a Legacy
Steel has bravely chosen to share his family’s experience, hoping to raise awareness and offer support to others navigating similar heartbreak. He recently opened up about the details of Leo’s fight in NICU,providing a stark and honest account of the challenges faced by premature and critically ill babies and their families.
In Leo’s memory, Steel has launched a charity challenge called ’13 days fighting’. Details of the challenge and how to participate are expected to be released soon, aiming to raise funds and support for families experiencing the trauma of neonatal loss and the challenges of NICU stays.
The outpouring of support for Steel and his family has been important, highlighting the power of shared experience and the importance of open conversations surrounding grief and loss.
