Gladys Knight is scaling back her live performance schedule as the 82-year-old soul legend transitions into a quieter chapter of her life, following a series of recent concerts that drew public attention and questions from fans, according to reports from outlets including NME, TheWrap, and USA Today.

The Grammy-winning singer announced her decision in a public statement on August 27, explaining that she intends to focus on personal projects and family time rather than maintaining a heavy touring routine.

“After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of her career and life moving forward,” Knight wrote in her statement. She added that she plans to spend more time on personal projects with her husband and visit her grandchildren.

Fan Concern Over Recent Performances

The announcement follows online discussion and concern from fans regarding footage from several recent concert appearances, including a July 25 show at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Smokey Robinson, according to TMZ and USA Today. Clips from the performances showed the singer occasionally missing cues, stepping aside for backing singers, and receiving assistance while moving across the stage.

According to TMZ, unnamed sources close to her tour raised questions regarding her well-being during the run of shows. However, her husband and manager, William McDowell, pushed back against rumors of cognitive decline while speaking with the outlet. McDowell stated that while Knight has “good days and bad,” continuing to perform remains entirely her own choice.

McDowell denied that Knight has received a dementia diagnosis, though he noted that she would undergo a medical evaluation soon. He also mentioned that he is currently building a performance venue near their home in North Carolina to allow her to continue singing locally without extensive travel.

Career Context and Prior Disputes

The scheduling adjustments arrive a year after public friction involving her son, Shanga Hankerson, who raised concerns in 2025 regarding her demanding touring schedule and alleged that McDowell subjected her to mental and financial abuse, claims that Knight and her representatives strongly denied at the time. Knight’s publicist dismissed those allegations as unfounded, maintaining that Hankerson had no substantial contact with her.

Known globally as the Empress of Soul, Knight has secured seven Grammy Awards across her solo work and her historic tenure with The Pips. Her definitive catalog includes enduring hits like Midnight Train to Georgia, I Heard It Through the Grapevine, Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye), and the James Bond theme Licence to Kill.

Recognition for her decades-long impact includes receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024, following her induction into the Kennedy Center Honors two years prior.

Future Tour Status and Fan Appreciation

Knight is not retiring from music entirely, and she still retains concert dates booked through mid-November, though her statement signals a deliberate reduction in her overall touring volume. In her August message, she expressed deep gratitude to the audiences who supported her across more than seven decades in the entertainment industry.

“I’d like to take a moment, in advance, to thank all my fans over this last three quarters of a century for making a little girl’s dream come true and supporting her every step of the way,” Knight wrote. “I am immensely grateful to all of you and send my eternal love back to you.”
