Glasgow Commonwealth Games to Revive the Mile Race
Updated June 01, 2025
The upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games will feature a streamlined program of 10 sports, hosted across four
venues within an eight-mile radius of the city.Scheduled from July 23 to August 2, the Games promise intense
competition despite halving the number of sports from the 2022 Birmingham event to manage costs and time
constraints.
Cycling events at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will showcase 26 gold medals, including eight in Para-track
cycling—double the amount awarded three years prior. Simultaneously occurring, the Tollcross International Swimming Center will
feature 56 medal opportunities, highlighted by the debut of the men’s 800m and women’s 1500m freestyle races.
In a surprising move, the customary 1500m race—an event where Scottish athletes Josh Kerr and Laura Muir have
achieved Olympic success—has been replaced. Instead, the Commonwealth Mile,a race last contested in 1966,will
take its place. Organizers have framed this decision as a tribute to the historic ‘Miracle Mile’ of the 1954
Vancouver Games, where Roger Bannister and John landy famously competed shortly after Bannister broke the
four-minute mile barrier.
“the mile is the quintessential Commonwealth athletics event whose return I very much welcome,” said World
Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who suggested the event to Glasgow organizers.
Coe added that from 1930 through 1966, the mile was the premier event of each Games, and its magic continues to
resonate. He predicted that tickets to the Commonwealth final will be highly sought after.
