Glasgow City Beat Athlone Town in European Qualifier
Athlone Town faces Uphill Battle After Chastening Champions League Debut
Glasgow, Scotland – Dreams of a fairytale Champions League run now hang by a thread for Athlone Town after a tough night at Petershill Park, where Glasgow City emerged victorious. The League of Ireland champions, reeling from recent uncertainty, now face a minor miracle to extend their participation in the inaugural competition.
The final scoreline doesn’t fully reflect athlone’s effort. For extended periods, particularly in the first half, they held their own against the Scottish powerhouse. Kelly Brady‘s early strike, capitalizing on a loose backpass from Glasgow’s experienced amy Anderson, briefly silenced the home crowd and troubled goalkeeper Lea Gibson.
Though, Glasgow, boasting ireland international Erin McLaughlin in their lineup, responded swiftly. A lightning-fast counter-attack, sparked by a cleared Athlone corner, saw Finnish winger Sofia Maatta leave Shauna Brennan in her wake. Maatta’s low cross proved tantalizingly out of reach for Town goalkeeper Megan Plaschko but perfectly placed for Anderson to redeem herself with a finish at the back post.
Plaschko proved a stalwart in goal, denying South African international Linda Motlhalo with a superb save, tipping her effort around the post. Interim boss John Sullivan, stepping in after Colin Fortune’s sudden departure, will have been encouraged by his new charges’ resilience. His focus now shifts to retaining their league title in the weeks ahead.
Despite their defensive efforts, athlone struggled to create clear-cut chances. The driving Glasgow rain seemed to mirror their struggles to conjure a goal. Plaschko continued to shine, denying Abigail Harrison’s downward header early in the second half.
Ultimately, the difference lay in Maatta’s quality. The Finnish winger proved a constant thorn in Athlone’s side, creating all three of Glasgow’s goals. Brennan was again caught out as Maatta delivered another dangerous low cross, allowing Motlhalo time and space
