‍

Glastonbury Festival, a highlight for music enthusiasts, ‍is currently ‍underway,⁤ but organizers have ‌confirmed the festival will take a fallow ‍year in 2026. This tradition, ‌rooted⁣ in agricultural practices, allows ⁣the Worthy⁢ Farm farmland⁤ to recover and replenish its nutrients.

The last official fallow year was in 2018. The COVID-19 pandemic⁤ forced‌ cancellations in 2020 and 2021. Emily eavis, a festival organizer, mentioned last July that the break would “give the land a rest.”

Michael Eavis, speaking in The Glastonbury Free Press, said he initiated the ⁣fallow years in ‌the ⁤1980s ‍to alleviate stress related to licensing, policing, and community relations. “we’ll give them all⁢ a break so they’ve got nothing to complain about for a bit! And of course,‌ the farm gets a rest,”⁣ Eavis said.

The gates to Glastonbury 2025 opened early Wednesday morning, with‍ fans greeted ⁤by Michael and Emily Eavis, accompanied by a brass band.⁢ Early‍ arrivals enjoyed a circus ‍and acrobatics show on the Pyramid Stage, followed by fireworks.

Music at Glastonbury kicks off tonight, with ‍performances scheduled across the site. Headline sets for tomorrow⁣ include ⁣The‍ 1975 and Loyle Carner, along with Biffy⁢ Clyro, Franz Ferdinand, ‍Wet Leg, Supergrass, and Self Esteem. Two secret sets ⁣are⁤ highly anticipated, with speculation pointing to Lorde‍ and Lewis⁤ Capaldi.

The weekend will feature Charli XCX, Deftones, Neil Young,⁣ Olivia Rodrigo,‌ The Prodigy, Rod Stewart, and many more.

Several⁤ changes have been implemented⁣ at this year’s Glastonbury site, with Emily Eavis noting efforts to ‍maximize space and ⁢reduce ‌ticket⁤ sales.

Eavis also commented on the BBC’s coverage, suggesting Neil Young’s set‍ may not be ⁤broadcast. She‌ addressed the controversy surrounding ⁣Kneecap’s performance, emphasizing that ‌”everyone is welcome here.”

What’s next

Following ‍the 2025‌ festival, Worthy Farm will lie fallow in 2026, allowing the land ‌and the local ‍community to rejuvenate ‌before the next glastonbury.
