Glatteis and Storm Disrupt Travel in Northern Germany
Niedersachsen is bracing for hazardous conditions as the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a severe weather warning for much of the region, effective from this evening until early Wednesday morning. The warning covers the north, west, and southern parts of the state, with potential for icy conditions due to freezing rain.
The DWD is urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor activities. Motorists are advised to adjust their driving to the conditions, ensure their vehicles are fully fueled, and carry blankets and warm beverages. Authorities anticipate potential road closures and disruptions to transportation.
The current warning is in effect from 9 PM tonight in southern, southwestern, and western Niedersachsen, expanding to include the north and areas around Hannover, Verden, and Osterholz by midnight. Several districts have already announced school closures for Wednesday due to the anticipated weather conditions.
Disruptions to Winter Road Maintenance Due to Strike Action
Ver.di has confirmed potential disruptions to winter road maintenance services due to ongoing strike action. According to a spokesperson for the state authority for road construction, emergency agreements are in place with unions to ensure essential services are maintained. The warning strike is scheduled to be extended across all of Niedersachsen on Wednesday.
However, striking employees can be recalled for emergency situations, such as fallen trees blocking roads or to assist emergency services. Snowdrifts and freezing rain are considered standard winter conditions, according to the spokesperson.
DWD Warns of Freezing Rain and Glatteis
The DWD reports that light snowfall is expected to move in from the southwest this evening, reaching the coast and the Elbe River by Wednesday morning. Accumulations of up to three centimeters of snow are possible, with higher amounts in the southern mountainous regions of Niedersachsen. Widespread icy conditions are expected due to the combination of snowfall and freezing rain.
Aside from the coast, conditions are expected to remain dry throughout the evening. Temperatures will range from -1°C in the southwest to -7°C in the Wendland region.
Further Snow Forecast for Thursday
Overnight into Thursday, conditions are expected to be cloudy with the potential for moderate snowfall moving in from the southeast. Low temperatures are forecast between -3°C west of the Weser River and -4 to -6°C east of the Weser. Thursday will remain cloudy, with lingering fog in the south. The snowfall is expected to move northward, with high temperatures ranging from 0°C in the southern Emsland to -2°C in eastern Niedersachsen.
Low water levels are also causing issues with ferry services to and from the East Frisian Islands, and on the Elbe River.
