Glen Powell to Star in New Country Music Comedy

Universal Pictures has officially titled the upcoming country music comedy starring Glen Powell and directed by Judd Apatow as The Comeback King. The announcement was made via social media ahead of CinemaCon.

The film features Powell as a Country Western star whose career is in a state of demise or free fall. The project marks a collaboration between Powell and Apatow, who co-wrote the screenplay for the feature.

Universal has scheduled The Comeback King for a theatrical release on February 5, 2027.

Cast and Production Details

Alongside Glen Powell, the film’s cast includes Cristin Milioti, Madelyn Cline, comedian Stavros Halkias and Li Jin Hao.

The production side involves several entities. Judd Apatow is producing through Apatow Productions. Glen Powell and Dan Cohen are producing for Barnstorm as part of their first-look deal with Universal.

Former Universal president of production Kevin Misher is also producing under the Misher Films banner. The executive producers for the project are Josh Church and Barry Mendel.

Development and Context

The project was previously known in industry circles as the untitled country music comedy starring Glen Powell. Reports indicate that Universal Pictures fast-tracked the original comedy.

The development of the film gained additional attention after Powell demonstrated his singing abilities during a country song performance while hosting Saturday Night Live in November 2025.

Judd Apatow brings a significant comedy pedigree to the director’s chair, having previously directed films such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Knocked Up (2007). His production credits include Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), and Superbad (2007).

This role follows Powell’s appearance as Tyler Owens in the 2024 film Twisters.
