A recent incident involving an Airbus A350 aircraft engine used by Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways has raised concerns in the aviation industry. The engine component failure, which occurred on one of the airline’s CX383 flights bound for Zurich, is the first of its kind worldwide.
Cathay Pacific announced that the affected aircraft returned to Hong Kong early yesterday morning, and upon inspection, the engine component failure was discovered. The airline emphasized its commitment to safety, stating that it has always complied with all maintenance regulations of the engine manufacturer and implemented rigorous maintenance procedures to ensure the safe operation of its fleet.
In response to the incident, Cathay Pacific has notified aircraft and engine manufacturers, as well as Hong Kong regulators, and is immediately inspecting all 48 of its A350 aircraft as a safety precaution. The airline has also discovered that some of the same engine parts need to be replaced and is working to purchase them overseas and deliver them to Hong Kong for repair.
The incident has resulted in the grounding of some aircraft for several days, prompting Cathay Pacific to adjust its flights, including canceling 24 pairs of round-trip flights in the past two days. According to Cathay Pacific Director of Engineering Jeff Peng, safety is the top priority, and the company is thoroughly inspecting each A350 aircraft, with those that pass the inspection being returned to flight.
The Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong has expressed great concern about the incident and will maintain contact with Cathay Pacific and relevant agencies to ensure aviation safety. The A350 is a long-range twin-engine passenger aircraft manufactured by Airbus, known for being the first civil aviation aircraft to use carbon fiber reinforced polymer in both the fuselage and wings.
