Global Celebrities Rally for UNAIDS: Join the Fight to End AIDS and Protect Human Rights
World AIDS Day 2024: Celebrities Urge Protection of Human Rights
On December 1, 2024, on World AIDS Day, sixteen global celebrities support UNAIDS’ call to protect human rights to end AIDS. Hollywood star Luke Evans and singer Sia are among those advocating for this vital cause.
Prominent figures, including actress Margaret Cho and comedian Alok Vaid-Menon, joined the effort. They emphasize that respecting human rights is essential for effective healthcare access, including HIV prevention and treatment.
Stephen Fry stated, “World leaders must take the rights path to protect people’s right to health and life.” He underscored the importance of human rights in improving lives and ensuring access to healthcare.
Alok Vaid-Menon noted that criminalizing LGBTQ+ individuals pushes them away from healthcare services, increasing their risk of HIV. A report reveals that 63 countries still criminalize LGBTQ+ people, highlighting the need for change.
Discrimination against women also impacts HIV progress. In sub-Saharan Africa, women and girls represented 62% of new HIV infections in 2023. Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, emphasized the link between education access for girls and increased HIV risks.
The UNAIDS World AIDS Day report shows that respecting human rights can help end AIDS. In 2023, 1.3 million people were newly infected with HIV, three times higher than the goal of 370,000 by 2025.
UNAIDS concludes, “To protect everyone’s health, we need to protect everyone’s rights.” Celebrities unite to spread this message, aiming for compassion, dignity, and solidarity for all affected by HIV.
