A comprehensive analysis of childhood cancer survival published in The Lancet indicates that while global survival rates have improved over the last 30 years, profound disparities persist between high-income and low-income regions.
The study, led by the Cancer Survival Group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, analyzed data from more than 600,000 children across 68 countries between 1990, and 2019. The findings suggest that many countries are on track to meet or exceed the 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer target of 60% survival at five years for all childhood cancers by 2030.
The Global Survival Gap
Despite overall progress, the data reveals a stark divide in outcomes based on national wealth. In many high-income countries, survival probabilities now exceed 80%.
In contrast, survival rates in low-income countries remain around 30%. In lower-middle-income settings, survival is estimated to be between 50% and 60%.
This inequality is further highlighted by reports indicating that 94% of childhood cancer deaths occur in poorer countries.
New Tools for Monitoring Progress
To better track these trends and support global monitoring, researchers introduced the Cancer Survival Index. This new measure is intended to help guide strategic investments and accelerate progress across diverse healthcare settings worldwide.
the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) launched a visualization platform on February 13, 2026, called the SURVCAN subsite. This platform is dedicated to childhood cancer and draws on data from 47 cancer registries in 23 countries.
The SURVCAN project assessed the survival of nearly 17,000 children at one, three, and five years after diagnosis. The results from this platform further emphasize the inequalities across different regions, countries, cancer types, and levels of economic development, providing high-quality population-based data from Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa.
Drivers of Improved Outcomes
The increase in cure and survival rates over the last two decades is attributed to the ongoing refinement of medical therapies. These include:
- Cellular therapies
- Immunotherapies
- Molecularly targeted precision medical therapies
The incorporation of these advanced treatments into childhood cancer regimens has contributed to improved outcomes even while the prevalence of the disease has remained largely stable.
Challenges and Future Requirements
The achievement of the WHO target in some regions masks significant data gaps. The findings underscore an urgent need for continued investment in several key areas to close the survival gap:

The disparity in survival rates underscores the profound emotional consequences for families in regions where access to quality care is limited, highlighting the necessity of ensuring that survival improvements are distributed equitably across the globe.
