Japan Ranks 96th Globally in English Proficiency
Japan placed 96th out of 123 non-native English-speaking countries and territories in a 2025 assessment of English skills, indicating a considerably low level of proficiency.
EF English Proficiency Index Findings
education First (EF), a Switzerland-based language training company, conducted the study, ranking countries and regions where English is not the native language based on their English proficiency. The 2025 EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) assessed over 2.2 million test takers across the globe.
