Global energy markets are facing the largest supply disruption in history due to a war in the Middle East, leading to record-high prices for oil and fuel cargoes and forcing governments to consider demand-side controls to stabilize their economies.

The crisis is centered on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint that typically carries approximately 20% of global oil consumption. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), shipping through the Strait, which normally sees the transit of around 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and oil products, has been reduced to a trickle.

This collapse in flow has pushed crude oil prices above $100 per barrel and caused even steeper price increases for refined products, including diesel, jet fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The disruption follows a series of attacks on oil-and-gas facilities across the Middle East.

International Response and Emergency Measures

In an effort to mitigate the supply gap, IEA Member countries agreed on 11 March 2026 to release 400 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves. This represents the largest stock draw in the history of the Agency.

Despite these supply-side efforts, the IEA has stated that such measures alone cannot fully offset the scale of the disruption. On 20 March 2026, the agency released a report outlining ten demand-side actions that governments, businesses, and households can implement quickly to improve affordability and support energy security.

These recommended measures focus heavily on road transport, which accounts for roughly 45% of global oil demand, but also extend to industry, cooking, and aviation.

Global Economic and Sectoral Impacts

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has noted that the conflict is driving higher prices and slowing global growth. The IMF indicated that while a short conflict might cause a temporary surge in oil and gas prices before markets adjust, a prolonged conflict could keep energy expensive and place significant strain on countries that rely on imports.

The aviation sector has been particularly hard hit. Jet fuel costs have skyrocketed, exacerbating the crisis for airlines. Analysts have warned that the situation could deepen as the war in Iran shows few signs of easing.

The impact is also being felt at the local level in non-oil producing regions. In Brisbane, Australia, skyrocketing fuel prices have led to reports that the city has become too difficult to navigate without a car, highlighting how Middle Eastern instability is affecting urban mobility globally.

Shift Toward Energy-Saving Regulations

As the supply gap persists, an increasing number of countries are imposing stricter energy-saving rules. This shift toward demand controls is becoming a primary tool for governments to manage the economic shock of the fuel shortage.

The IEA maintains that restoring transit through the Strait of Hormuz remains the only essential requirement to fully stabilize global energy markets.
