International Community Calls for 21-Day Ceasefire Between Israel and Hezbollah
Western countries, including the United States, and Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia, have proposed a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Islamic militant group Hezbollah.
A joint statement issued by the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the European Union (EU), Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar expressed concern over the escalating situation between Lebanon and Israel, stating that it “cannot be tolerated and poses an unacceptable risk of a broader deterioration of the situation in the region.”
The joint statement emphasized the need for an immediate 21-day ceasefire along the Israel-Lebanon border, highlighting that diplomatic efforts would not succeed amid the worsening conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Lebanese interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the proposal, but emphasized that Israel’s full compliance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions was crucial to the ceasefire’s implementation.
The United Nations adopted Security Council Resolution 1701 in 2006, during the all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, which called for a complete cessation of hostilities and respect for the borders of both countries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly in New York, USA, as part of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week.
