The sale of counterfeit “Bulgogi Fried Noodle” products, popular both domestically and internationally, has sparked controversy.
A professor at Sungshin Women’s University recently stated on social media that numerous overseas consumers have reported issues wiht counterfeit products. The professor noted that the packaging of these noodles closely mimics the genuine article.
Specifically, the characters and fonts on the wrapping paper of counterfeit “bulgogi Fried Noodle” products resemble those used by Samyang foods. Additionally, the “KOREA Mark” and “Halal Mark” are tough for overseas consumers to distinguish from the authentic versions.
According to the professor, the counterfeit products often feature the name “Bingoon” instead of the Samyang Food Mark, and the packaging indicates “Made in PRC” (People’s Republic of China) on the back.
In 2021, major South Korean food companies, including Samyang Foods, CJ CheilJedang, Ottogi, and Grand Prize, formed a joint council to combat counterfeit K-food products. They filed a lawsuit against Chinese companies for intellectual property infringement.
The amount of reimbursement ruled by the Chinese court at that time was controversial compared to the actual damage of each company. Now the Korean government should respond aggressively to protect our intellectual property rights abroad.
The professor argued that the presence of these counterfeit products could negatively impact the image of K-food worldwide.
