Global South Media News Network Launches in São Paulo
On November 11, 2024, the Global South Media News Network was launched at the Global South Media and Think Tank Forum in São Paulo, Brazil. Organized by Xinhua News Agency, this event focused on the theme “Development and Revitalization: A New Journey for the Global South.”
Nearly 350 delegates from over 170 media outlets, think tanks, government agencies, and companies gathered for the forum, which took place from November 11-12. Notable attendees included Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who both sent congratulatory messages.
The new media portal features sections such as “South-South News,” “South-South Cooperation,” and “South-South Lecture Hall.” Its mission is to highlight developments in Global South countries, encourage dialogue, and showcase the diverse cultures of its members. The website is available in Chinese and English, aiming to improve communication and collaboration among media and think tanks in the Global South.
Cheng Manli, an attendee and Honorary Director at Peking University, emphasized that the network intends to unite media from the Global South, strengthen regional representation, and promote multilateral cooperation. Malam Ali Muhammad Ali, CEO of the News Agency of Nigeria, noted that the network serves as an important platform for Global South nations to share their perspectives and enhance their global presence.
The forum received support from China’s State Council Information Office and was co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC). It aims to foster cooperation and connections among media and think tanks in the Global South.
