General Secretary and President To Lam Arrives in New York for UN General Assembly
General Secretary and President To Lam and the Vietnamese delegation have arrived in New York to attend a series of important multilateral and bilateral activities.
On the afternoon of September 21 (New York time, US – morning of September 22 Vietnam time), the plane carrying General Secretary, President To Lam and his wife Ngo Phuong Ly and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation arrived at JF Kennedy International Airport (New York) to begin the program to attend the Future Summit, 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, working in the US.
The Future Summit takes place from September 22-23, before the opening of the High-Level Week of the 79th United Nations General Assembly on September 24. With the theme “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future”, the conference aims to promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and climate goals, unify solutions to global challenges, and strengthen global governance.
The working trip of General Secretary and President To Lam to the United Nations is of great significance, continuing to affirm Vietnam’s contributions to the world’s largest multilateral organization, while also demonstrating Vietnam’s proactiveness and positivity in participating in solving regional and world issues.
Vietnam is an active and responsible member, and has been continuously making meaningful and important contributions to the United Nations. Vietnam has sent peacekeepers to many hot spots around the world. Vietnam has also made many contributions as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023-2026 term, a member of the International Law Commission for the 2023-2027 term, and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council…
On the other hand, the working trip to the US took place on the occasion of the first anniversary of the two countries upgrading their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and actively preparing for activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations in 2025.
This is an important occasion for both sides to review the achievements brought about by the new framework of relations, and discuss major orientations and measures to continue maintaining the positive, stable and substantive development momentum of the relationship in the coming years.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that General Secretary and President To Lam will deliver an important speech at the Future Summit and at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, have bilateral meetings on the sidelines, and attend other events.
Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung also said that General Secretary and President To Lam will have a very rich and diverse program of activities with a series of meetings and contacts with leaders, friends in the government, the business community, scholars, overseas Vietnamese, etc.
In particular, General Secretary and President To Lam will chair events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the first anniversary of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Cooperation and Sustainable Development, as well as deliver an important policy speech at Columbia University. On this occasion, many members of the delegation will also have bilateral activities with US partners.
