The Global Sumud Flotilla has departed from Barcelona, Spain, on April 15, 2026, launching a new maritime mission to Gaza. This voyage occurs more than six months after a previous attempt by the coalition was obstructed by Israel.
The initiative aims to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and draw international attention to the worsening humanitarian conditions in the region. The mission is part of a broader effort to challenge the Israeli siege of Gaza.
Organizational Structure and Objectives
The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international humanitarian coalition formed in July 2025. It is led by four primary organizations: the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Global Movement to Gaza (formerly known as the Global March to Gaza), the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and Sumud Nusantara.

The stated purpose of the movement is to break the Gaza blockade, deliver essential humanitarian supplies, and establish a humanitarian corridor. The coalition describes itself as a nonviolent movement of coordinated action by land and sea intended to confront the complicity enabling the occupation of Palestine.
Scale of Participation
Previous phases of the mission have demonstrated significant international scale. In August 2025, the flotilla involved more than 50 ships and delegations from at least 44 countries across six continents, including participants from Australia, Brazil, and South Africa.
Registration data for the coalition indicates more than 15,000 registered individuals and over 500 sailing participants. More recent reports from organizers suggest the fleet has grown to include more than 70 boats and 1,000 participants from around the world.
The participants are described as being unaffiliated with any government or political party, consisting instead of activists, humanitarians, doctors, and seafarers.
Recent Challenges and Legal Actions
The movement has faced significant opposition and legal challenges in various regions. In Tunisia, an arrest campaign began on March 6, 2026, targeting pro-Palestinian activists.
Seven activists were arrested and imprisoned on charges that the Global Sumud Flotilla describes as unfounded. These individuals include:
- Jawaher Channa
- Wael Nawar
- Ghassan Henchiri
- Ghassan Boughediri
- Sana Msahli
- Dr. Mohamed Amine Ben Nour
- Nabil Chennoufi
According to the Global Sumud Flotilla, some of these individuals were arrested for their efforts to break the illegal siege on Gaza.
Operational History
The 2025 efforts involved a coordinated series of departures. The first convoy departed Spanish ports on August 31, 2025, and was scheduled to meet a second wave of vessels in Tunisia on September 4, 2025.
The mission has also seen support from established environmental organizations, with Greenpeace sending a ship to assist the Global Sumud Flotilla in its efforts to sail to Gaza.
