U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. kennedy Jr.recently stated the Food ⁣and‍ Drug Administration will seek methods to accelerate the approval process⁢ for rare disease treatments. The goal is to eliminate obstacles hindering their market entry.

Kennedy’s remarks came during ‍an FDA meeting focused on ‍cell and gene therapies. The meeting included industry executives, researchers, and FDA officials, such as Vinay ⁤prasad, head ⁣of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

Separately, a ‍recent study published in JAMA Ophthalmology suggests a small but elevated risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among diabetes patients using GLP-1 drugs. This adds to existing concerns⁣ regarding eye health and these ⁣medications.

The observational study, drawing data from⁣ nearly 140,000 patients in Canada, revealed that after one year, the incidence of neovascular ⁣AMD was twice as high in GLP-1 users (0.2%) compared to non-users (0.1%).The participants, averaging 66 years old, were matched for socioeconomic status and various health ⁢conditions.

AMD is ⁤a primary cause of‍ irreversible blindness in older adults.Researchers, aware of other potential eye issues related to GLP-1s, investigated the possible link between ⁤these drugs and AMD.
