Apple’s Digital Car Key, introduced⁤ in 2020⁣ with ‍the iPhone and Apple Watch, allows users to unlock, start, and share digital ⁢car keys⁤ via their Apple devices. The feature utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for secure and keyless access. Apple Support details the technology and compatible devices.

  • Ford
  • Honda
  • Hyundai
  • Kia
  • Land Rover
  • Lucid
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Rivian
  • Tesla
  • Volkswagen

How it Works: NFC and UWB Technology

The Digital Car Key ‍leverages two primary technologies:

Technology Function Requirements
NFC (Near Field Communication) Unlocking doors by tapping iPhone or Apple‍ Watch⁢ near the door handle. Compatible ⁣door handle and‌ iPhone/Apple ⁤Watch.
UWB (Ultra-Wideband) Keyless ⁤starting and more ‌precise unlocking. Compatible vehicle and iPhone ⁣11 or later.

UWB ‍offers enhanced security and precision compared to NFC, allowing for more reliable keyless operation. The feature also allows for⁣ secure key sharing with family members or ⁣trusted individuals via iMessage.

Security Considerations
