Production Ceases Amidst Weakening Demand
General Motors has confirmed the end of BrightDrop electric delivery van production at its CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. Production was initially paused in May 2024 due too slowing demand in the commercial electric vehicle (EV) market, and the company has now decided not to resume production at any other facility.
This decision marks a important setback for Ontario’s ambitions in the EV sector, as the BrightDrop van was positioned as a key component of the province’s developing electric vehicle ecosystem. The CAMI plant had undergone a $1 billion retooling, supported by both federal and provincial funding, to facilitate the production of these vans starting in late 2022.
Impact on Workforce and Future of CAMI
Approximately 1,200 workers are employed at the CAMI Assembly plant, which has been a major economic driver for the Ingersoll region as its opening in 1989. GM Canada President and Managing Director Kristian Aquilina stated that the decision is “driven by market demand and in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.”
Hourly employees will receive a severance package including six months’ salary, potential lump-sum payments, and other benefits as outlined in the collective agreement with Unifor. GM has committed to collaborating with Unifor and both levels of government to determine the future of the CAMI facility, though specific plans remain undefined.
Factors Contributing to the Decision
GM attributes the slower-than-expected adoption of commercial EVs to several factors, including weaker demand, evolving regulatory landscapes, and the removal of U.S. federal tax credits for electric delivery vehicles. The plant had been operating below full capacity since production began, indicating early challenges in achieving projected sales volumes.
BrightDrop was launched in 2021 as a core element of GM’s broader strategy to transition to an all-electric future. However, the commercial EV market has proven more challenging to penetrate than initially anticipated.
Union Response Awaited
As of today, Unifor Local 88, representing CAMI workers, has not issued a public statement regarding the announcement. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
