Gmail is now incorporating AI-generated summaries at the top of email threads for some users. This new feature uses generative AI to condense email content, providing a speedy overview of the conversation. The AI summaries are part of Google’s ongoing effort to integrate AI into it’s products, using technology similar to that found in its Gemini AI model.

While AI-powered summaries can be useful, some users may prefer to read their emails in full. Fortunately, disabling the feature is straightforward. The automatic generation of these AI summaries is tied to Gmail’s “smart features.” Users can disable smart features in Gmail’s settings. To do so, open the app settings, select your account, and uncheck the smart features toggle.
For many, Gmail’s smart features are automatically enabled. However, they are disabled by default in Europe and japan. Disabling smart features will prevent the automatic display of AI summaries. Note that turning off smart features also disables other functionalities, including high-priority notifications, package tracking, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and nudges. The app may periodically prompt users to re-enable smart features.
What’s next
As Gmail continues to integrate AI, users can expect further refinements and potentially new AI-driven features. Google will likely monitor user feedback and adjust the implementation of AI summaries and other smart features accordingly.
