Google has introduced a feature allowing Gmail users in the United States to change their primary @gmail.com email addresses, removing a limitation that has existed for 22 years. As of March 31, 2026, the company has made this functionality widely accessible to users within the U.S. Market.

The update allows users to modify the username that appears before the @gmail.com domain without deleting their account or starting a new one from scratch. This development addresses a long-standing issue for millions of users who were previously forced to maintain outdated or unprofessional email handles chosen years prior or undergo a manual data transfer process to a new account.

Account Integration and Data Preservation

Google has designed the transition to ensure that account history and data remain intact. All emails, messages, photos, and files tied to the Google Account are preserved when a user switches their address.

Rather than deleting the original username, the system converts the old address into an alternate address or alias. This ensures continuity in communication and account access through the following mechanisms:

  • Emails sent to the old address will continue to be delivered to the user’s inbox.
  • Users retain the ability to send emails from the old address.
  • The original address remains valid for signing into the Google Account.

Google noted that the change will not be immediately reflected in all legacy instances. For example, events on Google Calendar created before the address change may still display the old username.

Usage Restrictions and Limitations

To prevent abuse of the system, Google has implemented specific constraints on how often a user can modify their username. Users are permitted a maximum of three changes, allowing for a total of four usernames including the original account address.

The frequency of these changes is limited to one swap every 12 months. Users cannot delete a new email address once it has been created during that period.

In cases where a user chooses to revert to a previously used username, Google enforces a 30-day cooldown period before a new username can be selected again.

Market Context and Implementation

Before this update, users seeking a new Gmail address were required to create an entirely separate account and manually migrate their data. This process was often complicated and could disrupt integrations with third-party applications that relied on the original email address for authentication.

The rollout of this feature followed a testing phase in select markets that began in late 2025. Support documentation for the functionality initially appeared in various languages before expanding to most regions and officially launching for U.S. Users by the end of March 2026.

While the company had previously allowed users to create email aliases, this is the first time Google has permitted the modification of the primary account username for @gmail.com addresses.
