Goalkeeper Gamble: Barcelona Seals Shock Deal for Czesny as Ter Stegen’s Replacement
Barcelona Reaches Agreement to Sign Polish Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny
According to recent press reports, Barcelona has reached an agreement to sign Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny on a free transfer to replace the injured German Ter Stegen.
Polish journalist Tomas Loderczyk confirmed that Szczesny will be a Barcelona player within hours of passing a medical on Thursday.
Szczesny has become Barcelona’s ideal choice to replace the German goalkeeper, who will miss the remainder of the season (8 months) for the Catalan club due to a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee.
Szczesny announced his final retirement from football before his contract with Juventus expired and his last participation was in the European Cup (Euro 2024) with Poland.

Szczesny’s Thoughts on Joining Barcelona
“Barcelona is one of the best clubs in the world. I’m thinking about it, we’re in talks,” Szczesny told Catalan newspaper “Sport”.
He added, “I understand the difficult situation that has arisen after Ter Stegen’s injury and I think it would be disrespectful for me not to consider this option.”
Szczesny’s Contractual Situation with Juventus
Sources in the newspaper said Barcelona’s management considered Szczesny the best of all candidates to keep the team in goal for the rest of the current season, but he must contact Juventus officials about a clause in his contract before completing the deal.
Szczesny has to resolve his contractual situation with Juventus, as he canceled his contract to retire, but he did so by including the terms of joining a top-level club before the end of the contract period, he must pay the club some money.
Sport indicate that the amount is not large, but Barcelona hope that Szczesny will resolve the issue before signing an official contract.
Szczesny’s Career Highlights
The former Arsenal goalkeeper agreed to terminate his contract with Juventus a year before the official expiry on June 30, 2025.
Szczesny has made 252 appearances for Juventus since joining from Roma for €18.4 million, keeping 100 clean sheets and saving nine penalty kicks with a success rate of 73%.
He also won eight titles with Juventus, winning the league 3 times, the Italian Cup 3 times and the Italian Super Cup twice.
