Goalkeeper’s Nightmare: Nelson Ramos Reveals Bizarre Twist in 6-3 Thrashing

Goalkeeper’s Nightmare: Nelson Ramos Reveals Bizarre Twist in 6-3 Thrashing

November 3, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

América and Deportivo Cali will face off in a new edition of the Valle del Cauca derby this Sunday in Pascual Guerrero. Although the red team is currently in better form than the green team, the protagonists of both teams have started joking on social media as they reminisce about the past of one of the most important matches in local football.

One of them is former America’s starting goalkeeper Nelson Ramos. He was the starting goalkeeper against the Scarlets in a memorable encounter on 10 October 2010, when Deportivo Cali beat America 6-3 thanks to three stunning goals from Argentine midfielder Martin Morel.

In a video recently shared on social media, Nelson recalled the harsh financial and sporting crisis America suffered at the time, just a year before the relegation. “We haven’t received three months’ worth of wages,” said the former Mjolnarios goalkeeper.

In one of his anecdotes from that match, he recalled arriving at the Palmaseca stadium in an armored car but experiencing one of the greatest humiliations of a professional goalkeeper.

One of the most vivid memories he shared was of his goal post being filled with party confetti rolls before a game, which he admitted hampered his agility when trying to block the Sugar team’s goal.

In that match, the Green team took the lead through striker ‘Manga’ Escobar, and then Nelson Ramos scored a penalty kick to tie the score. “I was passionately happy about that goal and I saw the white shirt people on the pitch also happy,” he said.

But Ramos confessed that the goal woke up a ‘sleeping lion’. This pointed to Argentina’s Morel, who later scored with a free kick to make it 2-1. Ramos emphasized that the goalposts filled with paper rolls obscured his vision and prevented him from seeing where the shot would be hit.

From then on, Cali continued to add goals, with the final score being 6-3, a huge win for the Green team.

As soon as he arrived in the locker room, Ramos picked up his phone and claimed to have found numerous missed calls from legendary goalkeeper Oscar Cordoba. He is a Colombian national team icon and Boca Juniors star.

“After seeing that, I returned the phone, but I expected some words of encouragement, but Oscar’s first reaction was to scold me. He asked me why I didn’t tell him about the paper. I had no choice but to apologize,” she said.

Finally, Ramos said that every year, come October 10, his phone is “filled with pictures of Morel and memories of that game.” He also noted that 14 years later, he still blocks people who mock him about that unfortunate run.
