GOG Launches One-Click Game Mods to Rival Steam Workshop
Updated June 09, 2025
GOG, owned by CD Projekt, is broadening its reach beyond classic PC game distribution by introducing a dedicated section for one-click game mods. This new feature aims to simplify content curation and provide free, easily accessible additional content for games purchased through its store. The company’s goal is to streamline the mod installation process for users.
Positioning itself against Valve’s Steam Workshop, GOG is initially rolling out this feature in a limited capacity. The current mod page showcases projects like horn of the Abyss for Heroes of might and Magic III, Phobos for Doom 3, and the Unofficial Patch for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. GOG also announced that skyblivion is coming soon.
The digital store bundles each mod with its corresponding base game, requiring users to own the game to access the extra content. This system aims to simplify mod distribution with seamless installation and full integration. These additions can introduce new quests, characters, or restore cut content, enhancing the overall gaming experience. Unlike traditional modding, which often involves manual file management, GOG’s system targets a broader audience by making the process more user-kind.

GOG believes that game mods are crucial for maintaining interest and relevance in today’s competitive digital market. The store is treating mods similarly to commercial releases, ensuring a streamlined delivery and installation process. GOG’s team collaborates with mod creators to test each mod, ensuring a smooth user experience.
However, compared to Steam Workshop, GOG’s curated mod page currently lacks the same level of integration with the store and the GOG galaxy client. Users have requested dedicated tools for mod creators to facilitate more efficient content delivery and updates.Without these tools, updates may take longer to appear on the platform.
CD Projekt had previously released unofficial mods on GOG, including the Fallout: London project. This new curated page builds upon those initial experiments, marking the company’s official entry into mod support.
What’s next
GOG plans to expand its one-click game mods library and improve integration with its platform, perhaps introducing dedicated tools for mod creators to streamline content updates and delivery.
