McSharry’s Performance and Record attempts
Mona McSharry of Ireland once again claimed a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke final at the Swimming World Cup in Toronto. She won her heat with a time of 1:03.96, narrowly missing the Irish record.McSharry then improved her time in the final, finishing in 1:03.84, surpassing her previous Irish standard of 1:03.92 set in 2021 by eight hundredths of a second.
This silver medal follows a strong performance by McSharry throughout the World Cup series, were she has set four new Irish records.
Douglass Dominates, Meder Finishes Third
The United States’ Kate Douglass secured the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke for the third consecutive week, completing a ‘triple crown’ with a winning time of 1:02.93. South Africa’s Rebecca Meder rounded out the podium, finishing third in 1:04.48.
Cullen Sets New Irish Record in Backstroke
Lottie Cullen also achieved a notable milestone, setting a new Irish senior record in the 100m backstroke heats with a time of 57.31. This surpassed Danielle Hill’s previous record of 57.56 set in 2023, according to Swim Ireland official results. Unfortunately, Cullen’s time was not fast enough to qualify her for the final.
Upcoming Races in Toronto
The final day of racing in Toronto will feature several Irish swimmers. Patrick Walshe and Ellie McCartney will compete in the 200m individual medley. McSharry will return for the 50m breaststroke, an event where she won gold last week in westmont, Illinois as reported by USA Swimming.
Additional Irish competitors include Lottie Cullen in the 200m backstroke, Brandon biss in the 100m backstroke, Lachey Reed in the 200m breaststroke, and Rosalie Phelan in the 100m freestyle.
