Updated June 15, 2025
U.S. men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear to his players that they must follow the team’s plans and cannot dictate their availability for matches. This comes after AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic expressed his desire to play in two friendlies leading up to the Gold Cup, but requested rest during the tournament itself.
Pochettino opted to exclude the 26-year-old Pulisic from the friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland. Pulisic, who has played extensively for both club and country since his move from Chelsea to Milan in July 2023, faced criticism from former U.S. internationals Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas regarding his commitment.
Pulisic told CBS Sports that he respected Pochettino’s decision but ”didn’t understand it,” adding that those questioning his dedication to the national team were “way out of line.” The coach, however, stood firm.
“Players [do] not need to understand or not understand,” Pochettino said. “Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan.”
He added that the decision to exclude Pulisic from the friendlies was explained. “Then if you have some problems, no, that is not my problem to understand.I am the head coach, I am not a mannequin,” Pochettino stated.
The U.S. team has struggled recently, losing 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 to Switzerland. These defeats mark their fourth consecutive loss leading up to their Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose on Sunday. The team’s Gold Cup role is now under scrutiny, and the commitment of key players like Pulisic is essential for their success. The US coach aims to instill discipline and unity within the squad.
