Gold Dome Concert Venue Proposal Seeks TIF Funding
Oklahoma City‘s Iconic Gold Dome Could Rise Again as Concert Venue
Oklahoma City, OK – The futuristic Gold Dome, a beloved Oklahoma City landmark, could soon be reborn as a vibrant concert venue. The Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Review Committee is considering allocating up to $3 million to help fund the ambitious redevelopment project.
Built in 1958 as a symbol of progress for Citizens Bank, the Gold Dome’s gleaming geodesic dome quickly became an architectural icon. However, by the late 1990s, the bank had closed its doors, leaving the building’s future uncertain.
Preservationists rallied to save the Gold Dome from demolition, recognizing its significance to the city’s history and identity. Jonathan Russell,a local developer, stepped in to purchase the dome, preventing its destruction and ensuring its preservation for future generations.
Now, Russell’s vision for the Gold Dome’s revival is taking shape. The proposed redevelopment plan includes transforming the space into a state-of-the-art concert venue, breathing new life into this iconic structure.
The TIF Review Committee will discuss the allocation of funds from the Assistance in Progress Financing Budget Category of TIF District B at a special meeting on December 6th at 431 W. Main St. the developer has committed to investing at least $7 million in private funds, contingent on the approval of bond funds to serve as a low-interest loan.
How TIF Could Revitalize the Gold Dome
Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is a powerful tool used by cities to spur development and revitalization in designated areas.
Here’s how it works:
Capturing Growth: TIF allows newly generated property tax revenue within a designated district to be reinvested back into that area for up to 25 years.
Funding Projects: These funds can be used for a variety of projects, including public infrastructure improvements, financing professional services, and providing assistance to private development projects.
Oklahoma City has successfully utilized TIF to fund numerous projects that have transformed the city, including:
Classen Corridor Revitalization: Breathing new life into a historic commercial corridor.
Innovation District: Fostering a hub for technology and entrepreneurship.
* Core to Shore: Connecting downtown to the Oklahoma River, creating a vibrant waterfront destination.
The potential redevelopment of the Gold Dome using TIF funding exemplifies the program’s ability to revitalize iconic landmarks while fostering economic growth and cultural vibrancy.
If approved, the Gold Dome’s transformation into a concert venue could become another shining example of how TIF is helping to shape a brighter future for Oklahoma City.

Can the Gold Dome Rock Again?
Oklahoma City’s iconic Gold Dome may soon be humming with a new kind of energy – the thrum of live music.
Local developer Jonathan Russell, who rescued the geodesic dome from potential demolition, is proposing to transform the landmark into a state-of-the-art concert venue. The project hinges on approval from the Oklahoma City Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Review Committee, which will convene on December 6th to consider allocating up to $3 million in TIF funds towards the $10 million redevelopment plan.
This wouldn’t be the first time TIF funding has breathed new life into the city’s landscape. Previous successes include the revitalized Classen Corridor, the burgeoning Innovation district, and the connection forged between downtown and the Oklahoma River through the Core to Shore project.
While Russell has committed to investing at least $7 million in private funds, the TIF funds would serve as a crucial low-interest loan, making this ambitious vision a reality.
The TIF Review Committee’s decision could mark a turning point for the Gold dome, allowing this cherished architectural icon to resonate with a new generation through the power of music.
