SAN FRANCISCO—The ⁢Trump Organization’s plan too launch a smartphone, dubbed Trump Mobile,is facing scrutiny‍ over ethical considerations and the practicality of ‍its “Made in America”⁤ claim.

The gold-colored Trump Mobile ⁤is priced at $499.

The proposed gold-colored handset, retailing for $499, has been met with skepticism. One industry analyst⁢ called it “virtually impossible” to fully manufacture the phone in the United States.

Meghan ⁢Faulkner, of Citizens for Obligation and Ethics in Washington, said the venture raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest. She ‍questioned whether individuals seeking influence ⁤with Trump might become customers, ‍and how the president would handle regulations affecting an industry in which his⁢ family now has a stake.

The Trump Mobile service will cost $47.45 monthly, a figure referencing ⁢Trump’s status as both the 45th and a hypothetical 47th president.

Eric Trump suggested⁤ on “The Benny Show” podcast that⁢ the initial ⁢phones, slated for an August release,‍ might not be entirely U.S.-made, while expressing hope that⁣ “eventually, all the phones can be built in the United States of America.”

Technology experts are doubtful about the “built in the United States” claim. Tinglong dai, a professor‍ at Johns hopkins’ Carey Business School, stated that manufacturing smartphones ⁣from scratch in the U.S. is “extremely unlikely,” citing the lack ‍of⁢ economies ⁤of scale and lasting demand.

The move comes‍ as Donald Trump has pressured Apple⁤ CEO ‍Tim Cook to manufacture iPhones for American ⁣consumers in the U.S. ⁣Last month, Trump threatened a 25% import tax on iPhones not made in America.

CCS Insight analyst Leo Gebbie noted the U.S. ⁢lacks the necessary high-tech supply chain for smartphone assembly, especially within the trump Organization’s stated timeframe. Gebbie suggested the ⁢phone ⁤might be assembled in the U.S. using imported parts.

The Trump Organization has not yet disclosed its business partner for the venture or ⁢responded to⁢ questions about ethics concerns‍ and ‍the “built in the united States” claim.

The company said it aims to provide ⁣”hard-working Americans” with an affordable wireless service that “reflects their values” and offers reliable quality. The service will offer discounted international calls for⁣ families with members in the military and U.S.-based customer support.

Since entering politics, Trump’s opportunities to profit from his brand have grown. His latest financial disclosure showed earnings exceeding⁢ $600 million‍ last year,‍ including revenue from Trump-branded items. Forbes estimated his ⁤net worth at⁢ $5.1 billion in March, attributing the surge partly to the “diehard following” supporting his social media company, which operates the Truth Social platform.

Reactions to Trump Mobile have been ⁢mixed, with some expressing interest and others mocking the concept. Social media⁤ users have questioned the phone’s design and speculated about whether texts on the device will be in all capital letters.

the U.S.mobile phone market ⁤is dominated by AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, with service plans starting below $40 per month. Mobile virtual network providers, smaller firms ⁤using existing⁤ networks, target niche markets with lower prices or tailored plans. Mint Mobile, backed by Ryan Reynolds, was acquired by T-Mobile for $1.35 billion in 2023.
