Hong Kong’s Golden Harvest Cinemas Close Doors

‍ Updated June 29, 2025

Golden Harvest, a prominent cinema chain, has shuttered all four of its remaining movie theaters in Hong Kong, marking the end ⁢of an era for local film enthusiasts. The closures include GH‌ Galaxy in Shau Kei Wan, which ceased operations Sunday. Three other locations-Sky at Olympian City, StagE in Tuen Mun, and GH in Tai Po-will be leased to a new operator starting Monday.

The final⁣ day at GH Galaxy saw six screenings across its two screens. However, only the 5:30 p.m. showing of Behind⁤ the Shadows, a film released June 12, sold out. Many seats remained empty, particularly in ‌the front rows, ‌signaling a decline in attendance.

Jason Chan, an architect living near the Shau kei wan cinema, said he wasn’t surprised by the closure. He noted the dwindling number of screenings ⁣and the shift to self-service machines. “I can feel it is indeed dying ‌slowly,” Chan ‌said, expressing hope ‌that a new operator might⁣ revitalize the‍ location.

Another resident, Danny L, lamented the loss of the “human touch” at Golden Harvest cinemas. He recalled the ‍chain’s history ⁤of hosting events where moviegoers could meet actors and actresses, and he valued the kind staff.

What’s next

While three of the Golden Harvest‍ cinema locations ⁣will be taken over by a new operator, the future of the GH⁣ Galaxy in Shau⁣ Kei Wan remains⁤ uncertain, leaving residents to hope for a revival of the movie-going experience in their neighborhood.
