“WORK OF CONSCIENCE”
Chinese stars returned to the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei after several years. Actress Hu Ling was the first to arrive since the ban.
On Saturday, Geng Jun and his cast walked the red carpet alongside stars from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. Geng’s film, Bel Ami, won awards for best cinematography and best film editing, although he did not win best director or best picture.
Despite ongoing political tensions, the Golden Horse Awards continue to support independent Chinese films. These films often lack distribution opportunities on the mainland. Taiwanese film critic Wonder Weng stated that the awards remain a benchmark open to diverse subjects.
Weng highlighted Lou’s latest film. It features a crew trying to shoot a movie during Wuhan’s COVID-19 lockdown. Weng praised Lou for including images that are often censored, saying he preserves important historical visuals and presents alternative viewpoints.
