The Golden State Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr has opened up about his future with the team, his complex relationship with star forward Draymond Green, and whether he might explore a career in politics after basketball.

In a recent appearance on “The Draymond Green Show,” Kerr reflected on his decade-plus tenure with the Warriors, acknowledging the emotional weight of what could be his final season coaching Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson. He spoke candidly about the bond he shares with Green, despite their well-documented on-court clashes over the years.

“Steph, myself, Steve shared a moment in what could be our last time playing with Steve as our coach,” Green said during the episode, referencing an on-court moment from the Warriors’ season-ending loss to the Phoenix Suns on April 18, 2026. “I’m happy we got to share that moment and he didn’t miss the moment. It was a big deal.”

Kerr, who has been the Warriors’ head coach since 2014, confirmed that his current contract expired at the end of the 2025-26 season. While he expressed hope about returning for another year, he admitted uncertainty about what lies ahead, both for himself and the franchise.

“I hope he’s our coach next year. You want my opinion? I think not. Just because it just feels like that. It felt like that was it,” Green said, conveying his personal belief that Kerr’s time with the team may be coming to an end. Despite this, Green emphasized his own desire to remain with the Warriors, stating, “I also hope I’m on this team next year. We also don’t know that.”

The conversation also touched on Kerr’s potential interest in pursuing politics after his coaching career. When asked directly about the possibility, Kerr did not rule it out, suggesting that public service could be a natural next step given his history of speaking out on social and political issues.

Over the years, Kerr has been vocal on topics ranging from gun control to racial justice, often using his platform as an NBA coach to advocate for change. His willingness to engage in political discourse has drawn both praise and criticism, with some within the Warriors organization reportedly growing weary of his activism, according to separate reports.

The Warriors are entering a pivotal offseason, with several key players facing uncertain futures. Draymond Green holds a $27.6 million player option for the 2026-27 season, with a decision deadline of June 29, 2026. He has outlined three potential paths: opting in to finish his contract, opting in and seeking a trade, or opting out to pursue a longer-term deal elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the futures of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson remain subjects of speculation, as the Warriors navigate the aftermath of a season marked by injuries to Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, and ongoing questions about their ability to remain contenders in the Western Conference.

As the organization prepares for potential changes in leadership and roster composition, Kerr’s legacy as the architect of the Warriors’ dynasty — four championships in eight years — remains secure. Yet, the human element of his relationships, particularly with Green, continues to define the final chapter of his tenure in Golden State.
