Goldsman on Ending “Strange New Worlds
“Star trek: Strange new Worlds” Season 5 Order a Compromise, Co-Showrunner Reveals
Paramount+ series to conclude with a shortened sixth season, but fifth season order secured to bridge narrative gap.
Paramount+ has confirmed that “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will conclude its run with a shortened sixth-season finale. This news, emerging shortly after the third season began airing, has been attributed to expected financial adjustments at Paramount following the Skydance merger. However,co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman has shed light on the decision-making process, revealing that the fifth season’s order was a crucial compromise to ensure the series could properly bridge the narrative gap to “The Original series” (TOS).
Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldsman explained to Collider that the studio initially intended for the series to conclude after its fourth season. “The original messaging from the studio as we were done, they wanted us to be done after [Season] 4,” goldsman stated. “We had made a commitment to the fan base, and to the narrative, that we would get right up against TOS.”
The primary goal of “Strange New Worlds” has been to fill in the narrative gaps and explore the backstories of characters who appear in TOS, or whose fates are uncertain by that era. Goldsman elaborated, “becuase there are a lot of folks from canon who are either diffrent or who seem to have vanished by the time TOS happens, and so we wanted to fill in those gaps.”
The studio, acknowledging this commitment, agreed to a compromise. “The studio said, ‘Oh, yeah, we did we agree. We were part of that bargain, too,’ and so they sort of said, ‘We can’t do a full season. What do you need to close it out?’ and we said six, and they said six, and so that gets us right up to Kirk‘s first day on the job.” This means the fifth season, while shorter than a typical season by four episodes, was essential to achieving the narrative conclusion planned by the creative team.
The compressed production schedule has led to an intense period for the cast and crew. Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers highlighted the demanding workload: “We’ve been working on Season 5 for months now. So we were working on Season 4 and Season 5 and doing press for Season 3 all simultaneously occurring.”
Filming for the fourth season recently concluded, with christina Chong, who portrays La’an Noonien Singh, confirming the tight turnaround for the actors. “More just like a breath,” Chong described the downtime between seasons.”But that’s actually probably really vital to take that breath, and also emotionally as actors to sort of get yourself ready for filming the final episodes.”
The series has already introduced iconic TOS characters such as Kirk, Spock, uhura, and Scotty. However, to align with the TOS timeline, several key figures are yet to appear, most notably Dr. leonard McCoy and Hikaru Sulu. Pavel Chekov, while a meaningful character in TOS, doesn’t debut until its second season, leaving his inclusion open to interpretation within the show’s narrative arc.
Conversely, the progression towards TOS necessitates the departure or repositioning of certain characters. Figures like Una chin-Riley, La’an Noonien-Singh, Erica Ortegas, and Pelia will likely exit the series as the timeline advances. Similarly, characters such as Joseph M’Benga and Christine Chapel may see their roles substantially altered or “demoted” to fit the established canon.
“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” continues to stream its third season on Paramount+.
