Ted, the patterdale terrier mix and breakout star of the BBC comedy series Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, has died at the age of 13. The BBC confirmed the news on April 30, 2026.

The canine companion first appeared on the fishing series in 2020 during its third series. Since his debut, Ted became a regular presence on the program, accompanying comedians Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse on their various adventures across British riverbanks.

Ted was owned by Lisa Clark, the executive producer of Gone Fishing. Clark rescued Ted from a dog’s home in Surrey in 2013 when he was approximately six months old.

Throughout his time on the series, Ted was frequently depicted as a scene-stealing presence, often sticking his snout into the stars’ fishing bags. Mortimer and Whitehouse developed a detailed fictional backstory for the dog, jokingly characterizing him as an explosives expert who had lost his briefcase in the woods.

Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing. He took fame in his little stride and loved nothing better than messing around on the riverbanks, nicking Jammie Dodgers from Bob and bait from Paul.

Beyond his television role, Ted achieved literary success in 2024 with the release of his book, A Pawtobiography, which became a Sunday Times bestseller.

Bob Mortimer expressed his grief over the loss of the dog, describing him as the best companion and the greatest little chum and stating that he would miss him so much.

Paul Whitehouse also paid tribute to the terrier, noting that he was a species all of his own and remarking that he had gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky.

Clark noted that Ted will be missed both on screen and at home, where he is survived by Bo the briard.

Ted is scheduled to make his final appearance in the forthcoming ninth series of Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, which is due to air later in 2026.
