Ahead of the final broadcast, producers released preview footage showing an aged Qiu Xue, played by Su Ming-ming, finally speaking on the phone with Li Jun-xian, played by Wang Rong-yu, after 40 years of separation. The preview also depicts political persecution survivor Zhong Ming, played by Hsia Ching-ting, crossing paths with Qiu Xue once again to confront a past filled with lingering doubts. Further intensifying the emotional stakes, Fang Zhi-you’s character delivers a poignant line about the end of war while sharing a deep look under fireworks with Lin Che-hsi. Meanwhile, Jun-xian remains stranded in Korea, aging far from home after a tearful farewell with Eun-suk that dashed his hopes of returning across the sea.

Cast Members Detail Intense Physical and Emotional Demands

Reflecting on the dramatic climax, lead actress Fang Zhi-you revealed that shooting the interrogation scenes pushed her to her absolute limits. She explained that she had to shake violently on an electric chair until she was utterly exhausted, even portraying the extreme physiological reaction of involuntary urination under torture to authentically capture a victim’s suffering. Shooting those final episodes felt like an escape from reality, leaving the cast and crew breaking down in tears during rehearsals and run-throughs. Co-star Lin Che-hsi shared that a remark from the director deeply resonated with the cast on set. The director said if those historical social events hadn’t happened back then, this group of people might have simply been able to eat meals together and grow up normally. The moment the director finished saying that, everyone’s eyes turned completely red, and we were totally immersed in that emotional state while filming. Actor He Hao-chen recalled the suffocating claustrophobia of filming inside a solitary confinement cell. He noted that spending time in a space measuring only one or two pings stripped away his sense of freedom and time, driving him to the verge of madness where he began experiencing hallucinations of Qiu Xue appearing beside him. Meanwhile, Kou Chia-ray portrays a military police secret service agent caught between strict adherence to the institutional system and the prosecution of his friends. Producer Chen Nan-hong has indicated that the series will provide a definitive resolution for these intertwined character arcs as the drama concludes its run on Public Television Service.
