Goodwill is expanding its presence in Puerto Rico, opening new retail locations and bolstering its commitment to providing job training and community services on the island. The nonprofit organization, which first entered the Puerto Rican market in , is currently constructing a store in Manatí, slated to open in early summer, following recent openings in Carolina.
The newest location, opened at the Los Colobos shopping center in Carolina, spans 11,000 square feet. This expansion represents a “measured but steady growth trajectory” according to Ken Kramer, who oversees Goodwill’s Puerto Rico operations. The organization opened its first store in Puerto Rico at the Escorial shopping district in Carolina and a second in Bayamón, bringing the total to three stores in under a year – a pace Kramer says aligns with original projections.
“Yes, the next one is Manatí, which is already under construction,” Kramer said in an interview. “That should open in early summer, which should put our employee count to more than 200 for Puerto Rico.”
Goodwill’s entry into Puerto Rico marks a significant development for the island, offering a combination of affordable retail options and vital workforce development programs. The organization’s model centers on accepting donations of clothing, household items, and other goods, selling them in retail stores, and reinvesting the proceeds into community-based initiatives. These programs focus on providing job training, employment placement services, and other support to individuals seeking economic independence.
The opening of the Los Colobos store was celebrated as a milestone for Goodwill and the local community. The organization’s expansion follows an extensive remodeling of the former IKEA Plaza Escorial building, demonstrating a substantial investment in the Puerto Rican economy. Founded in in Boston, Massachusetts, by Edgar J. Helms, Goodwill has a long history of empowering individuals through work.
The organization’s internal targets for expansion have become more ambitious as store performance and donation flows continue to meet expectations. While final site negotiations are ongoing, Goodwill anticipates potentially operating between five and six stores on the island by the end of . This growth reflects a positive reception from the Puerto Rican public and a growing demand for the services Goodwill provides.
Goodwill de Puerto Rico is committed to being accessible to the communities it serves. Current locations include stores in Bayamón (Carr 174 Km 0.4, Bayamón, Puerto Rico 00958), Escorial Square (1500 South Ave., San Juan, Carolina 00987), and Los Colobos (Ave. 65 de Infantería, PR-3 KM 14, Carolina PR). Donations are accepted Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. To 9 p.m., and on Sundays from 11 a.m. To 7 p.m. The organization cautions against leaving donations outside of designated hours due to security concerns.
The expansion into Puerto Rico comes at a time when the island is focused on economic recovery and rebuilding following recent challenges. Goodwill’s presence offers a valuable resource for residents seeking employment opportunities and affordable goods, contributing to the island’s overall economic well-being. The organization’s focus on sustainability, through the recycling and repurposing of donated goods, also aligns with growing environmental awareness and responsible consumption practices.
The success of the initial stores has allowed Goodwill to expand its operational infrastructure, donation networks, and workforce capacity. This strategic approach ensures that the organization can effectively deliver its programs and services to a wider range of individuals across Puerto Rico. The Manatí store represents a key step in extending Goodwill’s reach beyond the San Juan metropolitan area, bringing its services to communities throughout the island.
The organization’s growth in Puerto Rico is part of a broader trend of nonprofits expanding their reach to address social and economic needs in underserved communities. Goodwill’s model, which combines retail operations with workforce development programs, has proven effective in empowering individuals and strengthening local economies across the United States and now, increasingly, in Puerto Rico.
