The Future of Search is Here
Google is fundamentally changing how we interact with information online. On Thursday, the company announced a significant expansion of its AI Mode, bringing new “agentic” capabilities and extending its reach to 180 countries and territories worldwide. This isn’t just about finding information; it’s about Google’s AI actively doing things for you.
Powered by DeepMind’s Project Mariner, AI Mode is evolving from a search tool into a digital assistant. Rather of sifting through links, you can ask Google to handle tasks – booking a table at a restaurant, securing concert tickets, or even planning a trip – and it will leverage its AI to get it done.
From Searching to Doing: The power of Agentic AI
The core of this update lies in “agentic AI.” traditional search engines respond to keywords. Agentic AI, however, understands the intent behind your query and takes multiple steps to fulfill it. This means AI Mode can handle complex requests that would previously require multiple searches and website visits.
For example, instead of separately searching for Italian restaurants, checking availability, and then making a reservation, you can simply ask AI mode to “find a highly-rated Italian restaurant for four people in Chicago at 7 PM.” The system will then surface real-time reservation options directly within the search results, partnering with services like OpenTable, Resy, and Tock to streamline the process.
