Google Apps: Are They Really Worth It?
Google’s Wallpaper App: A Missed Opportunity or a Sign of Things to Come?
Table of Contents
google’s foray into the wallpaper app market with its own dedicated “Wallpapers” app has left many users, including myself, feeling underwhelmed. While the idea of a wallpaper app from the company behind the Pixel and a host of essential productivity tools sounds promising, the reality is far from it.
A Basic Offering in a Crowded Market
Upon recently switching to an older OnePlus phone, I rediscovered the Google Wallpapers app, an app I had long forgotten existed. My initial excitement quickly faded after a few minutes of exploration. The app is remarkably basic, offering a surprisingly small selection of wallpapers. Compared to established rivals like Zedge, which boast vast libraries and extensive customization options, google’s offering feels incredibly limited.
The wallpapers are categorized into a mere ten sections, a stark contrast to the hundreds of categories found in competing apps. This limited scope feels like a critically important oversight, especially considering the sheer volume of visual content available today.
The Wallpaper Selection: Generic and Uninspired
Beyond the limited quantity, the quality of the wallpapers themselves is also a point of contention. Most of them strike me as generic and uninspired, though I did manage to find a few gems. What’s particularly baffling is Google’s failure to integrate its powerful AI, Gemini, into the app. Imagine the possibilities: users could generate custom wallpapers based on text prompts, leveraging Google’s competitive advantage in AI.Instead, the app remains stubbornly basic, leaving one to question its very purpose.
Google’s App Portfolio: Where Dose Wallpapers Fit In?
This experience with the Wallpapers app brings to mind other Google applications that, while functional, have been so rudimentary that they eventually met their demise, much like Google Podcasts. While I don’t foresee a similar fate for core apps like Google Keep or youtube Music, the Wallpapers app feels like a prime candidate for discontinuation if it doesn’t see significant improvement.
In a recent poll, users were asked about their least favorite Google apps. While Keep, Tasks, and YouTube Music received votes, the Wallpapers app emerged as the least favored, with a significant portion of respondents expressing their dissatisfaction. This sentiment is understandable; in a world saturated with visually rich and interactive content,a basic wallpaper app from a tech giant like Google feels like a missed opportunity,a relic of a simpler time that doesn’t quite fit into today’s dynamic digital landscape.
What’s Next for Google’s App Strategy?
It’s clear that Google has several apps that could benefit from a serious overhaul. The Wallpapers app, with its limited selection and lack of AI integration, is a prime example. Whether Google intends to invest more resources into this app or eventually phase it out remains to be seen. For now, it stands as a testament to the fact that even tech giants can sometiems miss the mark.
