Google Drive on Android Tests Dedicated Scan Tab for Easy Document Digitization
Google is experimenting with a new role for the Google Drive Android app, giving its document scanning feature a more prominent position. The test introduces a dedicated “Scan” tab in the bottom navigation bar, aiming to simplify the process of digitizing documents and receipts.
Currently, the Google Drive app features a bottom bar with tabs for Home, Starred, Shared, and Files, along with a floating action button (FAB) to create new folders, upload files, scan documents, or create Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides. A smaller FAB above it provides a shortcut to launch the camera scanner directly.
The new “Scan” tab, positioned in the center of the bottom bar, directly opens the camera interface for scanning. This change reduces the size of the plus FAB. Google previously increased the size of the camera shortcut earlier in the year to emphasize the scanning function.

The addition of the Scan tab reflects Google’s assessment of the feature’s importance to users. By elevating it to a core section, Google aims to make document digitization more accessible. The new role of the scan function is to provide a more streamlined user experience.
what’s next
If the testing phase proves accomplished, the dedicated “Scan” tab could become a standard feature in future updates of the Google Drive Android app, further enhancing its utility for users who frequently digitize documents.
