Google has rolled out a software update for Google Home and Nest devices designed to fix a persistent bug that caused smart speakers to play incorrect music, albums, and playlists. The resolution addresses user complaints logged across online communities, though Google has not disclosed the root technical cause behind the playback errors, according to reporting by Android Authority.

Google Home Playlist Bug Fixes

Users had reported that asking their Google Home devices for specific playlists frequently resulted in unrelated tracks or albums playing instead. According to Reddit threads on the r/googlehome subreddit cited by Android Authority, the issue affected routine voice commands for music streaming. In response to the user complaints, Google’s official Nest Community account stated, We fixed the issue that was causing the wrong playlists to play, and asked affected users to report back if they continue experiencing similar failures.

Wider Updates to Gemini for Home and Voice Controls

The update introduces improvements for Spotify voice commands, making it easier for smart speakers to recognize requested artists, songs, and personal playlists such as Liked songs, provided users have Personal Results enabled. Additional updates to message broadcasting now require a two-step process—starting with a broadcast command followed by a follow-up message after a short wait—to reduce miscommunications. Furthermore, users can now set smart lights to specific color temperatures by designating precise numerical values in Kelvin, such as asking the assistant to adjust living room lights to 2700 kelvins.

User Frustrations and Transition Concerns

Despite the newly deployed fixes, the transition from the legacy Google Assistant to Gemini for Home has encountered user criticism regarding broader reliability issues. T3 reported that Google Home’s Chief Product Officer, Anish Kattukaran, posted on X to acknowledge the recent feedback and apologize for Google Assistant reliability issues across smart home devices. Kattukaran stated that the company is actively working on major improvements, adding that we hear you loud and clear and are committed to getting this right — and making sure we have a long term solution that provides better reliability and capability.
