According to Similarweb data released in October 2025, traffic to Google Gemini surged to 1.1 billion monthly visits, marking a 46% increase since August. The growth comes as OpenAI faces user backlash over newly introduced safety features in ChatGPT, though OpenAI maintains a significantly larger total traffic share and a more loyal user base across the generative artificial intelligence market.

Google Gemini Traffic Jumps 46 Percent in September

Google’s flagship AI chatbot reached 1.1 billion visits in September 2025, according to web traffic estimates from Similarweb. That figure represents a 46% jump compared to August traffic numbers. The surge pushed Gemini’s traffic share of the artificial intelligence chatbot market from 9.1% up to 13.7% by early October. OpenAI’s ChatGPT saw its traffic share decline from 78% down to 73.8% over the same comparative window. Total monthly traffic for ChatGPT reached 5.9 billion visits in September, keeping the platform positioned as the fifth most popular website globally and the only chatbot to rank in the top ten, per Similarweb figures.

OpenAI Safety Feature Backlash Drives Competitor Gains

Industry observers and analytics firms indicate that part of Gemini’s recent momentum stems from user frustration directed at OpenAI. In late September and early October, OpenAI rolled out updated safety mechanisms designed to detect when users are in distress and automatically route sensitive conversations to a specialized model designated as GPT-5 Instant. While OpenAI stated on X that the update helps better recognize and support people in moments of distress, paying users voiced strong opposition to the automatic routing. Many subscribers reported that the moderation triggers too easily during standard creative and professional workflows. One user, Claire, posted on X.com that No one wants your nanny mode; let adults make their own choices! after being repeatedly redirected away from their preferred model configuration. Another user detailed having to delete and revise inputs just to maintain continuity with the original model. These friction points prompted some active users to explore alternative tools like Google Gemini.

Comparing User Loyalty Across Generative AI Platforms

Despite the traffic shift and user complaints, Similarweb data demonstrates that ChatGPT retains the strongest audience loyalty in the generative artificial intelligence sector. Approximately 82.2% of ChatGPT users visit no other competing generative AI site, establishing a dominant retention rate. Google Gemini follows in second place for total traffic volume but trails significantly in exclusive audience loyalty at 49.1%. Other market entrants show even lower single-site retention, with Grok holding 35.6%, Perplexity at 33.1%, and Claude recording 18% user loyalty according to the October metrics.
