Google is significantly expanding its digital infrastructure in India with a new initiative dubbed “America-India Connect,” designed to bolster AI connectivity and overall network resilience. The project, announced during the India-AI Impact Summit in , involves the construction of new subsea cable routes and fiber-optic networks connecting India to the United States, Singapore, South Africa, and Australia.
At the heart of the initiative is the establishment of a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), on India’s east coast. This gateway will be connected by three new subsea paths to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia. Four strategic fiber-optic routes will be deployed to enhance network connectivity between the US and India, extending to multiple locations across the Southern Hemisphere. This builds upon Google’s existing subsea cable projects in the Pacific and Africa, according to a company press release.
The “America-India Connect” project is anchored by Google’s previously announced investment in AI infrastructure in India. This investment includes the construction of a major AI data center in Andhra Pradesh, unveiled last year. The new subsea cables and fiber networks are intended to complement this data center, providing the necessary bandwidth and low-latency connections to support advanced AI applications.
Google’s strategy involves creating redundant and high-capacity routes. A direct fiber-optic path is being developed between Vizag and Chennai, also on India’s east coast, to South Africa. When combined with the Equiano and Nuvem subsea cable systems, this will create a robust connection between the American east coast, Africa, and Vizag. Similarly, a direct path between Vizag and Singapore, coupled with the Bosun and Tabua subsea cable systems, will establish a South Pacific route linking the American west coast, Australia, and Vizag.
The expansion of subsea cable infrastructure is critical for supporting the growing demands of AI and other data-intensive applications. Subsea cables are the backbone of the internet, carrying over 99% of international data traffic. Increasing capacity and redundancy in these networks is essential to prevent bottlenecks and ensure reliable connectivity, particularly as AI models become larger and more complex.
