The changes were originally slated to roll out in January 2026. However, Google has pushed the timeline back by a full year, giving users until January 2027 to adapt their workflows.

Legacy Tools Targeted in Upcoming Discontinuation

The upcoming discontinuation impacts multiple legacy tools designed for handling outside email providers within a single inbox. The most notable change is the retirement of the Send As function.

As reported by Droidapp.nl, that feature let users send emails from the Gmail web interface using a work address or an alias hosted by a different provider.

POP3 Support and Spam Protection Face the Axe

In addition to the Send As tool, Google is pulling support for fetching external emails via POP3. This older protocol allowed Gmail to pull messages from competing services.

Other casualties include the built-in spam protection for external mailboxes and the ability to add or synchronize new external email accounts within the web version of Gmail.
