Google has officially released a desktop search application for Windows, transitioning the tool from its experimental phase in Search Labs to a global stable release. The application is available for users on PCs running Windows 10 or newer and is currently supported in English.

The app functions as a floating search bar that users can trigger instantly using the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut. This design allows users to find information without switching windows or interrupting their current workflow, whether they are working in a document or playing a game.

Integrated Search Capabilities

The Windows app provides a centralized interface to search across multiple data sources simultaneously. Users can query the web, local files stored on their computer, installed applications and files stored within Google Drive.

To facilitate different types of discovery, the search bar includes various view options. Users can toggle between All, Images, and a specialized AI Mode. In the current stable version, the app defaults to AI Mode, reversing the dynamic of the earlier experimental version which prioritized the classic search interface.

AI Mode provides deeper AI-powered responses, allowing users to explore topics further through follow-up questions and integrated helpful links.

Visual Search and Screen Integration

Google has integrated Google Lens directly into the desktop application. This allows users to select and search for any visual element currently visible on their screen. Practical applications for this feature include translating text or images and obtaining assistance with homework problems.

Beyond the text field, the search bar includes specific functional options. Users can upload files directly through the interface or share their screen to ask Google questions about the content they are viewing.

Development Context and Availability

The release follows a testing period that began in 2025, when Google first announced the experimental version in Labs. During that initial phase, some early adopters were advised to uninstall and reinstall the app to maintain updates, a hurdle that the current stable release is intended to resolve.

The application’s functionality has been compared to the Spotlight feature found on macOS. While the Windows app is now available globally in English, Google has not confirmed plans for a macOS or Linux version of this specific search bar. However, reports indicate that Google is testing a separate Gemini app for macOS to compete with AI chatbot applications from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Users can download the application directly from Google’s website.
