Google Maps for Wear OS Gets Material 3 Expressive Makeover

Google maps is testing a Material 3 Expressive redesign for its Wear OS app, aligning with the upcoming Wear OS 6.The new design aims to provide a more efficient and visually appealing experience for smartwatch users.
The updated interface replaces the previous three side-by-side circles with two rows of prominent “pills.” The largest pill allows users to directly access the map layer, followed by a search function that defaults to voice input. Shortcuts for “Home” and “Work” are now displayed as shorter pills, maximizing screen space by omitting the address.
A teal accent color, consistent with the mobile app’s design, is implemented throughout the Wear OS app. It remains to be seen whether this color scheme will eventually adapt to the user’s selected watch face theme.
Google has also updated the “Search & go” Tile to be more compact.This allows for quick access to the map layer, “Home,” “Work,” recent locations, nearby places, and a prominent “Search” button.
The Material 3 Expressive redesign is currently available in the beta version (25.24) of Google Maps for Wear OS. The new design offers a more dynamic and engaging experience compared to the previous list-based interface.
