Google Messages is developing functional group chat invite links and QR codes, moving a previously incomplete feature closer to a public release, according to testing details reported by Android Authority. The upcoming capability, alongside a notification snooze function tracked by technology journalist Abhinav Anand at SammyGuru, will allow users to share text links or QR codes for seamless group joining. While the feature remains inaccessible by default in current stable builds, recent beta testing confirms that generation of working invite links is now operational.

Functional Google Messages Invite Links and QR Codes

First spotted in development stages in May of last year, the group chat invite feature mirrors options already available on messaging platforms like WhatsApp, according to coverage from SammyGuru. Users will soon be able to generate unique text links or QR codes that direct individuals into active group chats. Testing confirms that the underlying system successfully creates working invite mechanisms, though Google has not yet announced a formal rollout date for the stable channel.

To safeguard participant privacy, these generated links include automated constraints. According to reports from Android Authority and 9to5Google referenced by SammyGuru, the invite links can be configured as single-use or reusable, and they will automatically expire after a set period, likely 30 days. Furthermore, hosts retain administrative control to revoke specific invitations if unauthorized participants manage to access the chat.

Notification Snooze Function and Mention Controls

Alongside invite links, code teardowns indicate that Google Messages is testing a dedicated notification snooze function. As detailed by SammyGuru, this tool lets users mute individual or group conversations for predefined durations of 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely. Unlike Android’s system-wide notification snooze, which caps out at two hours, the Google Messages implementation offers extended flexibility for managing communications during personal or professional hours.

Recipients will not receive alerts when a chat is snoozed by another user, maintaining discretion. However, reporting from 9to5Google notes that critical alerts will still bypass the snooze filter if a user is directly tagged via an @mention. Because these features are currently identified through app teardowns and beta versions, their exact public release schedule remains unconfirmed by Google.
