Maps users located outside of both the United States and Canada encounter a combined label reading Lake Ontario (Lake America). Google states that these changes adhere to a long-standing company policy regarding bodies of water with names that vary by country. Mother Jones reports that the recent update mirrors a similar platform adjustment made after President Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America via a day-one executive order issued last January. In that instance, Google implemented a split view displaying the Gulf of America in the United States, the Gulf of Mexico in Mexico, and a dual label in the rest of the world.

The modification to Lake Ontario follows a history of platform compliance and corporate donations directed toward the administration. According to Mother Jones, Google previously eliminated DEI hiring goals last February while reviewing Trump executive orders unwinding DEI in the federal government. In addition to policy adjustments on mapping and internal operations, major technology companies including Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft each contributed $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund last year, as reported by Mother Jones.
