Google has confirmed the rollout of major new Android features to millions of devices worldwide following a livestreamed “Android Show” event. The free upgrades, which include the Gemini Intelligence AI system and a tool designed to curb distracting app usage, are scheduled to arrive in waves over the coming year for both high-end new and older devices, including Samsung and Pixel hardware.
Gemini Intelligence and Automation Upgrades
Gemini Intelligence combines Google’s top artificial intelligence tools into a single system designed to interact directly with phone apps. The system can automate tasks such as selecting and ordering a takeaway, converting a grocery list into an online shopping basket ready for delivery, or locating a class book list inside an email to order the correct textbooks. Gemini queues these orders before handing them over to the user for final confirmation. Additional AI capabilities include Chrome auto browse, arriving in late June, which will navigate websites to book tickets or find parking spots. Autofill is also receiving an upgrade to complete complex forms by pulling information automatically from phone apps and services. Furthermore, generative user interfaces will let users create home screen widgets through simple text instructions, such as asking for local toddler-friendly events or weather conditions suitable for cycling routes. In Gboard, a new dictation system called Rambler edits speech into concise sentences by removing redundant or repeated words, filler sounds, and other errors while supporting mid-speech language switching.
Device Controls and App Integrations
The update introduces Pause Point, a new tool intended to help users avoid apps they designate as distracting. Tapping a flagged app triggers a pop-up suggesting breathing exercises, favorite photos, or productive apps instead, alongside app timers designed to limit doomscrolling. Quick Share compatibility with Apple’s AirDrop is expanding beyond Pixel devices to encompass a range of phones from Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor. Quick Share will also allow users to share files and photos with Apple devices using QR codes, the cloud, or established messaging applications like WhatsApp. Instagram on Android is receiving on-device editing tools, including a one-tap smart enhancement feature for photos and videos alongside a sound separation tool to remove unwanted background noise. Instagram will additionally support ultra HDR capture and playback, video stabilization, and night-sight integration. Screen Reactions will simultaneously record a user and their screen to instantly create social media reaction videos, and Google has redesigned all 4,000 emojis into 3D for Pixel devices and services.
Android Auto and Navigation Enhancements
Android Auto is receiving a visual redesign featuring smooth animations, bolder fonts, colors, and wallpapers, alongside support for widgets and shortcuts on the vehicle display. The system will integrate Gemini Intelligence features from compatible phones and permit video playback on the car screen only when the vehicle is parked, switching to audio-only playback while moving. The most significant upgrade within Android Auto applies to Google Maps, which introduces an immersive navigation view displaying 3D buildings, bridges, and terrain. Important routing details such as lane guidance, traffic lights, and road signs will be overlaid directly onto routes.
