Google Search Gets a Clarity Boost: New Ad Labels and‍ a “Hide” feature Roll Out

Published on October 14, 2024 at 8:37 AM

For the billions who rely on Google Search ⁣daily, navigating results pages is about to become a little cleaner. Updates rolling out globally on both desktop ⁤and⁢ mobile devices are designed to make it immediately clear which results are organic and which are sponsored advertisements.

The core change centers around a new, more prominent “Sponsored ⁤results”⁢ label. instead of individual labels on each ad, text ads will now be grouped under this single, larger designation. Crucially, this label remains visible even⁢ as you scroll down the page, ensuring transparency about ad placement. This move⁢ reinforces a commitment to clear ad labeling, a standard Google has long‍ championed within the‍ industry.

But the update doesn’t stop at visibility. Google⁤ is also introducing a “Hide sponsored results” control. With a ‍single click, users can collapse all text ads, ⁢allowing⁤ them to focus solely ⁤on the ⁢organic search results. Internal testing indicates this ⁢feature improves overall page navigation and user experience.

It’s meaningful⁣ to note that the size of the ads themselves isn’t changing, and the number of text ads displayed in a grouping will remain capped at four. The “Sponsored” label isn’t limited to text ads either; it will also be applied to other ad formats, such as Shopping ads, providing a consistent visual cue across the search results page.

These⁤ changes, implemented as of October 2024, represent a continued effort to⁢ balance the needs of users seeking information with the ⁣presence of advertising within the search ecosystem. The goal is a more streamlined and transparent experience for everyone.
